Its that Common Cold!

You feel it as soon as you wake up in the morning. Your nose is clogged, possibly dripping, and you realize you’ve been breathing through your mouth for most of the night while this lovely situation set on while you were fast asleep. Sort of gross, I know, yet we’ve all been there, many of us multiple times a year. It’s that delicious Common Cold, and its here yet again to make your next few days quite miserable.

Some people are contracting the Common Cold as many as eight times per year. The common Cold is a contagious viral infection of the Upper Respiratory Tract, and is the most common infectious disease in the United States, as well as being the number 1 reason your kids stay home from school. Most of these colds are caused by rhinoviruses; invisible droplets in the air we breathe, or residing on the things we touch in our day to day life.

Despite what your Mother may have told you growing up, one can not catch a cold by not wearing their jacket outside, or sleeping in a drafty area. We can throw swimming and getting out of the water while its cold out the window too. What does cause the Cold however, especially in the Winter, is dry air. Dry air lowers one’s resistance to infection by the viruses that cause colds. Smokers are more at risk for catching a cold as well. A smoker’s symptoms will almost always be worse, will last longer, and has a high probability of leading to Bronchitis or even Pneumonia. If you’re cold lasts longer than a week, and that cough of yours is getting worse, make sure to take yourself to a Doctor.

Of course, because the Common Cold exists as a part of life, and is going to be just about everywhere you will need to go, the best thing that you can do is attempt to protect yourself by practicing good hygiene, and most importantly, wash your hands as often as possible.
