We have all made it through the holidays and now we’re officially enjoying winter. I’m not writing about you folks in the south, where it’s nice and warm. You may be itchy, too, but for different reasons than we folks who live in the cold north.
The cold air is dry. The heated houses and offices are dry. When we’re in our cars the heaters are blowing hot, dry air in our faces. I can’t walk through a doorway without stopping to scratch my back on the doorframe. My spaghetti spoon is no longer used for pasta. It’s my primary backscratcher.
I’ve read where we can liken our skin to clear plastic food wrap, which covers a multi-layer cake. This wrap keeps water from evaporating from our bodies and also keeps irritating substances and germs from entering. When there is enough moisture and protective oils in our skin, it is soft, pliable and smooth. When our skin dries out it shrinks, and as it shrinks, small cracks occur. These cracks allow the underlying living cells to be exposed to substances and germs in the environment, and we itch.
Here are some tips to help with your dry, itching skin…….
- Take short showers (only one per 24 hours) in warm (not hot) water, using a liquid shower cleanser (such as Dove or Oil of Olay) rather than bar soap.
- After showering, pat dry with a towel. Within three minutes apply a moisturizer to seal the water in the skin before it can evaporate.
- If you are looking for moisturizers, look no further. We have some really effective moisturizers in our store.
- Reapply moisturizers liberally throughout the day and evening to those areas prone to dryness (hands, arms, legs) and when itchy.
- You can treat any inflamed dermatitis patches with over-the-counter cortisone cream. If it doesn’t improve, you will need to see a doctor for prescription strength cortisone cream.
- When using both a cortisone product and a moisturizer, always use the cortisone first and the moisturizer second.
- Increase the humidity level in the air of your home and workplace. Consider adding a humidifier to the heating system of your home. Use a portable humidifier, especially in your bedroom at night.
- Drink plenty of water.
So, fellow northerners, slather on the moisturizer and enjoy a warm, toasty evening by the fire.
