Bed-wetting by children can be a common issue but parents find it difficult to handle and accept it. Some of them feel more frustrated than would the kids themselves. Some parents even show impatience with their little ones and this can have an adverse effect on the children who grow up feeling guilty for having put their parents through this.
I am talking of this from experience since I have seen a distant cousin very often lose her patience with her daughter who wet the bed in the night as a toddler. The impact of the constant bickering had a psychological effect on the little girl who grew so nervous about it that even as a 13-year-old she continued to wet the bed! Then once into her teens, she somehow got over it.
Bed-wetting is a common problem among children and this is especially true of boys. Most of them outgrow it before they enter elementary school. It could be happening for a number of reasons, one of which could be a delay in the development of the child’s central nervous system. In such a case, it would warrant treatment. In fact, in most cases, if bed-wetting persists beyond the age of 3.5-4 years, experts suggest a visit to the pediatrician. And such a visit would be followed up by examining in details data about the child’s speech, behavior and growth skills plus his or her motor skills.
It is even suggested that those girls who continue to wet their bed even after they are past four years of age are likely to have been born prematurely.
Whatever may be the reason, it is always advisable to seek the help of a pediatrician. In most cases, these conditions go away as the child grows older. But it is better not to ignore it anyway, in case the problem is bigger than it might appear.
And losing patience… that is an absolute no no!
