I was reading this report on our site by the Science Daily that according to a new theory, sleep could help clear your brain so that it can absorb new learning. That is interesting but not surprising because it has always been insisted that a good sleep can do wonders to your body, both mentally and physically, and poor sleep could destroy you completely!
In fact, a few days ago, I read in a health report on this very site that poor sleep could ultimately even lead to suicide! This BBC News report said that “adults who suffer chronic sleep problems may be more likely to commit suicide”. Even if the person has no history of mental illness! This was a theory forwarded by US researchers.
Now this is very disturbing indeed and goes further to establish the fact that sleep is so important for us. It can either make us or break us. Get good sleep and get your brain functioning big time. Get no sleep and you can turn into a zombie.
Again, the question that may arise is how many hours of sleep are sufficient for the body to function well. This we had discussed at length in an earlier write-up on this site – Miles To Go Before I Sleep! According to experts, sufficient sleep differs from individual to individual. While six hours is enough for one, another might need at least eight hours.
But what I have realized is that getting good sleep is not dependant on the number of hours you spend in bed. It depends more on the quality of sleep. You could be in bed eight hours, but tossing and turning and waking up at the slightest noise. And after eight hours, you are as bad as you were before you went to sleep. But four hours of sound sleep could wake you up feeling rejuvenated. So quality of sleep is very crucial.
And quality of sleep again depends on the mattress you use, the pillow you lay your head upon and the environment around. It is advised that one should spend more money, even if one has to, on a good quality mattress because, if the earlier mentioned researches are anything to go by, then your life depends upon a good sleep.
