Osteoporosis: ‘Not An Old Age Disease’

The word osteoporosis often brings up images of elderly women stricken and suffering from weakened bones. Osteoporosis is often associated with old age but that is not true. Osteoporosis does not necessarily afflict old women only. The truth is that after the age of 35, a woman’s bones start to thin and thereafter she becomes fully exposed for an onset of osteoporosis. It is of course most common in women after menopause.
Osteoporosis is essentially a bone-thinning disease which results from losing bone mineral density. This increases risk of fracture in women and can be quite troublesome if not taken care of at its onset.
By making just a few lifestyle changes and ensuring that you get a proper diet, one can prevent osteoporosis and even stop it in its tracks. Lifestyle changes would mean doing regular exercises, taking the right supplements and diet plus soaking up some sunshine.
Exercise plays a very crucial role in the treatment of osteoporosis. Weight-bearing exercises are very effective. Examples are walking, playing tennis which put force through the bone that stimulates repair and keeps it strong.
Medical experts say that your bones cannot do without magnesium which is the third most abundant mineral in the bones and helps to keep them strong. You will find abundant magnesium in leafy green vegetables, in nuts, seeds and grains.
Experts also say that someone who is prone to osteoporosis or suffering from it should avoid excess salts and not overdo on the Vitamin C bit. They also believe that one should try and get all these minerals through natural means instead of depending on supplements. Fruits and vegetables have plenty of minerals that are in natural balance.
Other factors, as enlisted by experts, that can cause osteoporosis, are dieting and eating disorders, fizzy drinks and an inactive lifestyle.
