Reduce Desk Stress

In my earlier write-up about unhealthy work environment, Stress At The Desk, I talked about how an uninterrupted long stint at a workstation and uncomfortable seating can put your entire body at risk. In this write-up, I shall give some 10 tips to ensure that your workstation is ergonomically and ‘your’ body friendly. Plus to make sure that you are maintaining healthy habits while working.
Points to keep in mind:

  • Whenever you sit at the desk, ensure that your feet are planted firmly on the floor. If they are not, then rest them on a box or a footrest.
  • Do not sit in the same position for more than 15 minutes. Lean forward, push your knees apart and stretch your fingers and the whole body at regular intervals.
  • After every 10 minutes, move your eyes away from the screen and look around. Stare at distant objects in the room. Exercise your eyes.
  • Adjust the keyboard to ensure that your wrist posture is straight.
  • Do not strike hard on the keyboard. It will only strain your fingers and hand.
  • Ensure that when you are looking at the screen, you don’t have to strain your neck. If this is the case then adjust the screen so that your eyes can see it without having to move the head.
  • Keep the monitor away from glares and reflection. That will only make you strain your eyes further.
  • Keep your back supported with a proper lumbar support.
  • Keep your hands, wrist and forearms parallel to the floor.
  • Your posture should be such that your knees bend at right angles and your thighs are parallel to the floor.

There are many more ways in which you can make your work more comfortable. Can you think of more tips?
