Despite most of our waking hours being spent in front of our computer, yet we remain unaware of how a computer can damage us! By ‘damage us’ I mean how a computer can inflict injuries on our backs, arms, shoulders, neck and eyes. And I am sure you readers understand what I mean by this ‘injuries’. If a computer is used incorrectly for long stretches of time we could end up with backaches, stiffening of muscles in the neck and arms, poor eyesight and, as a result, pounding headaches,
We cannot avoid the use of a computer, can we? So, what is the next best thing to do? Well, according to health experts, the solution to this is an ergonomically-sound workstation and a comfortable work routine. By the latter I am referring to adequate breaks in between work sessions.
By an ergonomically-sound workstation I mean a computer table and chair that suits the body type of the person using it. If the user is tall, the table should be higher than normal so that he can extend his legs comfortably without getting cramped for space. Similarly, he can place his arms on the table at the right height. This will facilitate correct usage of the mouse and keyboard.
The chair in which you sit has got to be right, too. So that when you sit, your upper arm should fall straight down by your sides and the forearms should be at right angles to your upper arms when working at your desk. And if this does not happen, then that means you need to adjust your chair. And make his happen.
But most importantly, listen to your body and see what it is trying to tell you… sore backs, stiff necks, tightness and discomfort in the body, pain in the upper arm, shoulders or back… these could all be signs that you need to be putting your workstation in order!
In my next write-up, I will come up with tips on avoiding desk stress. If you have some too, please share with this forum.
