What to Buy Kids for the Holidays

Happy Holidays HPFY readers! During the holiday season, buying gifts is almost always a stressful task. Picking out the right present is never easy. Sometimes children can be easier to buy for because we all know what they want; toys! However, if you don’t get the right toy this can often result in the scorn of an 8 year old for years to come. But what is the big deal? They are just toys right?
The National Board for Education Sciences, the advisory board for the Education Department's research agency, recently did a study on the effects of home environment supporting learning. One of the major criteria of this study dealt with the use of educational toys. Yes, this does include books and “learning tools” that may or may not make the child you are buying a gift for hate you. But it also includes options that are educational but still fun.
The studies by the National Board for Education Sciences showed that there is a positive effect for educational toys on children. They found that 70 percent of children whose parents created and maintained a high-quality home environment which includes the use of educational toys performed at or above national norms on two tests of early school readiness, the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and the Woodcock-Johnson Revised Tests of Achievement. These children performed a full standard deviation higher on average than children with low-quality home environments—the difference between being considered on-level and at risk in kindergarten. But what toys can fall into this category and still be fun?
The experts claim that really any toy can be educational as long as it is used in a positive and supportive manner. The top rated educational toys for this season are mostly video-game based, with integrated reading comprehension and math themes. This can be great in this age of technology. Children are so technologically inclined these days that this may be a way to keep interest in education while still having fun. But what if you would rather not have your child glued to a TV screen all day?
Studies show that the non-media based educational toys that children respond to the most are rooted in science. One of the simplest yet effective ways of showing chemical reactions to kids and helping them to understand how the process works is the old Mentos in a 2 liter bottle of cola trick. This is a simple little experiment, but clearly not a gift. However, there are many gift ideas based on science out there.
Our current sale for the week is Gifts for Children, where we offer free shipping and double rewards as well as discounted prices. Within this promotion are various educational gift ideas for kids this holiday season. Some of the science-based toys are the Ginsburg products. These include a ballistics car which demonstrates properties of velocity by catapulting a steel ball out of a moving car model. Also, there is electricity and magnetism kit as well as an energy conversion kit. All three of these examples are a great way to make learning interesting and enjoyable this season. And if science isn’t an interest of the child you are buying for, we also offer various educational puzzles and musically oriented toys. Conventional toys are also included in this promotion, but any toy can be beneficial and educational if used properly.
So to conclude, if you are shopping for a young child during the holidays get them a toy and make them smile. Trust me, they will be much happier with a toy than that sweater you were planning on getting for them. But don’t make it just any toy. Make it something meaningful and able to promote education in a fun and interesting way. Remember to visit our website to view our latest promotion.
